Family recipes are the heart of the fall season. Comfort foods bring families and friends together and make us feel at home in the midst of our busy holiday schedules. From baked good to savory dinners, check out some favorite recipes from familiar faces around the Center!

Jeanne Millsaps

Bud’s Seafood Grille

Bud’s parents relocated to California from Arkansas when he was 2 years old. His mother was a wonderful southern cook. As a wedding shower gift, she gave me two cast iron skillets, a must-have in southern cooking, and the only pan she used to make cornbread in. I loved her cornbread – it’s not sweet or cakey like most cornbread recipes because it doesn’t contain sugar or eggs. It is a simple, bread-like cornbread, and I not only make it go with a meal but it is the bread base I use for cornbread dressing, another favorite recipe of hers. She made many of her recipes without measuring, so it was hard for me to recreate them without watching her closely and guessing the measurements. I’ve been making this cornbread in my trusty, well-seasoned, cast iron skillet for almost 49 years now and it’s good, but I don’t think it will ever taste as good as hers!

Ruby Nell’s Cornbread

1 cup white cornmeal

1 cup flour

1 tbsp baking powder

½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

1 ¼ cup buttermilk

2 tbsp canola oil

Wisk dry ingredients together. Add buttermilk and mix well. Consistency should be wet like cake batter. Don’t be afraid to add more buttermilk. Head 8-inch skillet on the stove with 2 tablespoons oil. Truth be told, the oil was often bacon grease and more than the 2 tablespoons listed. When skillet is hot, pour batter and put the skillet in a hot 400-degree oven for about 25 minutes until cornbread turns a beautiful brown. It should make eight nice size pieces of cornbread.

I am an Ohio native and a big Ohio State Buckeye fan! My family and I love to enjoy this chocolate peanut butter treat around the holidays every year. It’s so simple to make and is always a crowd favorite!

Easy Buckeye Candy

10 oz. package Reese’s peanut butter chips

16 oz. can vanilla frosting (not whipped)

12 oz. package chocolate candy melts

Line cookie sheets with waxed paper. Melt peanut butter chips in medium saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly. Add frosting and stir until fully combined. Let stand until cool enough to handle and roll mixture into 1-inch balls and place on cookie sheets. Refrigerate for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, place candy melts in tall microwave-safe mug according to package directions. Coat each ball with candy – pierce ball with a wooden skewer, leaving the area around skewer uncoated. Place dipped ball back on waxed paper – pushing candy off the skewer. Smooth skewer hole with finger or back of a spoon. Makes 6 dozen candies.

Trader Joes

I have been at Trader Joe’s for three years so it’s safe to say I’ve tried just about every food in the store. I’d love to share with you my go to recipe from Trader Joe’s. Did you know, there is an extensive collection of easy recipes on the Trader Joe’s website? This recipe for Hot & Sweet Cheesy Jalapeno Dip is so easy to make and everyone who tries it loves it. And of course, everything needed to make it can be found in one stop at Trader Joe’s!

Hot & Sweet Cheesy Jalapeno Dip

6 oz. cream cheese

1/3 cup mayonnaise

½ cup sour cream

1 tsp garlic powder

¾ cup shredded cheddar cheese

¾ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

½ cup Trader Joe’s Hot & Sweet Jalapenos patted dry and chopped

½ tsp salt

1 tbsp butter, melted

½ cup breadcrumbs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix cream cheese, mayonnaise and sour cream in a large bowl. Add garlic powder, shredded cheeses, jalapenos, and salt – stir to combine. Spread mixture into a glass baking dish and set aside. In a small bowl, mix melted butter and breadcrumbs. Sprinkle over dip mixture. Bake for 25 minutes or until breadcrumbs are golden brown and dip is bubbling. Let cool slightly and serve with Trader Joes Blue Corn Tortilla Chips, Pretzel.

Pictured left to right, Wayne Richardson, CEO of Gospel Center Rescue Mission and Phil Johnson, President, Sims Grupe Management.

It requires a strong vision and determination to impact a seemingly intractable problem like homelessness.

On any given night, more than half a million people are without permanent homes in the United States.  And Stockton is not immune.  So how does a community combat a growing problem of homelessness?  There are simply not enough government resources available, so cities rely upon non-profit agencies to help.  In turn, organizations like the Gospel Center Rescue Mission (GCRM) largely depend on charitable donations from individuals and businesses to help fund their programs — and look for creative ways to broaden community awareness.

For over 75 years the GCRM has served the Stockton and surrounding communities by providing food, shelter, clothing, addiction treatment and medical care for the homeless.  And since its inception, the GRMC has remained true to its core belief that each and every homeless person is an individual — not a statistic.  When a person walks through the doors at the Gospel Center they might be seeking temporary shelter or a hot meal, but what they get is an opportunity to change their life.

When Wayne Richardson took over the CEO position in 2016, he envisioned new ways to strengthen community relationships and broaden awareness of the GCRM through partnerships with corporations.  And Lincoln Center was a logical choice — a locally owned and operated business with strong community ties.  The partnership with Lincoln Center offers a unique opportunity to help the homeless a bit differently than traditional philanthropy. As Richardson explains,  “Instead of just a check being written we are joining forces to help work on the homelessness problem together.  It enables a branding of a non-profit like ourselves with a community leader like Lincoln Center and becomes a winning situation for us both.”

President and CEO of Lincoln Center, Phil Johnson, is proud of the partnership and three-year commitment to partner with the agency.  “When we realized just how bad the homeless situation has gotten here, we wanted to make a commitment to help…and not just a one-time donation,” says Johnson.  “We have the resources and the passion to make a positive social impact, and the fact that we can actually sponsor individuals on their path to leading productive lives is powerful.”

Lincoln Center has pledged financial, promotional and hands-on support. Last month several volunteers from Lincoln Center rolled up their sleeves and painted at the Gospel Center as part of the “Love Stockton” day.  Another mutual benefit of the partnering, Richardson says, is that the branding includes all Lincoln Center merchants.  They can feel good about making a difference in the community, and their customers can embrace all of the various promotional activities to support a cause that affects all of the society.  This partnership is the first of its kind in over 300 Association of Gospel Rescue Missions, and Richardson praises Lincoln Center as the “George Washington” of cause-related marketing for homeless shelters and local business.

In his short time at GCRM Richardson has implemented new policies and procedures, upgraded and expanded facilities, and clearly laid out plans for the future. Partnering with Lincoln Center is another positive step for the Gospel Center and in the fight against homelessness, and Richardson is continuing to forge relationships with other area business leaders, organizations and agencies.  He wants to see all “ships rise with the tide” and join together — with the ultimate goal of restoring lives. To learn more about the Gospel Center Rescue Mission, visit their website.

This year, there are two different ways you can get involved with helping the Gospel Center Rescue Mission right here at Lincoln Center.

July 14th brings us to smack dab in the middle of the year! Whew — where has the time gone!? Let’s celebrate by rocking out allll night long with the one & only Summit Band. A fan favorite all through town, Dan Spediacci and his crew do a fantastic job covering some of musics hottest hits — old and new! Don’t miss them perform from 6-9 pm on the Plaza and grab yourself a beer while you’re there at the Midgley’s Public House beer garden.

Did you know? On June 16th, 2017, Grease the Movie celebrated its 39th Birthday. Do you feel old? Because we do! But that doesn’t change the fact that this is still one of our all-time favorite movies. I mean, who doesn’t LOVE this ending? So pop the popcorn, bring your blankets and chairs, because we’re pulling out the projector and playing this family favorite classic. The movie starts at 8:30. The Jet Set Band will be providing entertainment from 6-8:30 pm prior to show time. See you there!

To round out the month, we’re inviting you to enjoy an evening filled with acoustic music throughout the Center. Grab a seat on the Tio Pepé’s or Midgley’s Patio to listen from 6-9 pm.
